Colour Placement Guide - Granny Square Edition

This is something that has been on my ‘to do’ list for a long time!

I get so many comments and messages about colour placement particularly when you want it to look random.

There are of course apps around these days that will produce a random colour placement for you however in my experience they still don’t quite hit the spot often pooling light or dark colours together in one corner or side of the blanket making it look unbalanced. This is fine if you want the unbalanced look but if like me you like order and balance even when you’re doing random then my method may work better for you.

I’ve been using a ‘planned random’ method for my granny squares for some time and it takes some of the stress and overthinking out of colour placement decisions. All the blankets you see here have been made using this method.

I’ve put together a six page guide (in PDF format) which will talk you through my process. It’s NOT a crochet pattern, it is purely an explanation of how to place colours in a methodical, balanced but random way when making five and six round granny squares. I also explain in the guide how to adapt the method for different size blankets and there’s a few colour combo tips at the end.

You can find the guide in my Kofi shop here

If you are a very visual learner I also have a video on my You Tube channel which gives you a visual of this process specifically when making a five round granny square baby sized blanket.

I really hope you find the guide useful! Thank you very much to all of you who have already bought my guide, I really appreciate it.
