Logan

I've had a couple of balls of King Cole Bramble DK in colourway Loganberry in my stash for a while just waiting for inspiration to strike.........I’ve seen recently on socials that King Cole are sending out loads of this yarn range as freebies, my socials are full of crochet accounts advertising it but as always I just want to stress again that I ordered and paid for this yarn myself from Wool Warehouse back at the beginning of the year, it was not a freebie and I don’t do advertising or content creation for yarn companies out of principle.

I've said this many times before that variegated yarn is a funny animal! It lures you in with all it's pretty colours and then you try to crochet something with it and it can look nothing like you imagined!! The key to it for me is to work out if the colour changes are short or long. If short then small squares can work well, If long then stripes can work well although that theory doesn't always work out! Sometimes it's just a lot of trial and error!

King Cole Bramble changes colour quickly so I decided to make little three round solid grannies and it's worked really well for them as I didn't want too many colour changes within the squares. The bigger your square the more colours there will be within the square so it really depends on the look you're after.

I took this yarn to Craft and Chat with me last month to experiment with and at first I really wasn't sure if I liked how it was working up but I persevered and after making the first eight squares in the photo below it started to grow on me more and more.

You can find my video for making three round solid granny squares here, they are the same ones i made for my Amber blanket, just bear in mind that there is a colour change in the video after the second round that isn't required here as all three rounds are made with the same yarn

How to make solid granny squares

I got 33 squares out of each 100g ball so I made an 8 x 8 size blanket (64 squares total). I don't block my squares, the process of joining will block them for me. I talk more about my thoughts on blocking here......

FAQs

I’m joining my squares with Yarnsmiths Create in Off White ( I used about 120g in total) using a continuous join as you go method…..

Continuous join as you go with (UK) dcs

It’s the same method I used for my Amber blanket

I really enjoy the joining process and I loved seeing all these squares come together........it's turned out to have a really nice Autumnal feel to it which I wasn't expecting.

I've worked the same border as I did for my Amber blanket.

If you would like a written pattern for the Amber blanket you can find it in my Etsy shop here

Amber Baby Blanket Pattern

The only difference with this blanket and the Amber blanket is that I have made 64 squares rather than 36 and I have used the same yarn for all three rounds of the solid grannies. Everything else is exactly the same. It's interesting to see how the same pattern can look with a very slightly different colour placement!

It's been a fun little make and I hope this helps you use that variegated yarn stashed away just waiting for the perfect project!
