My Thoughts on AI (Artificial Intelligence)

I first wrote about this back in Nov 2025 on my cross stitch blog but seeing as my crochet is now being targeted I thought I would update it and post it here on my crochet blog too so everyone can be absolutely crystal clear where I stand on this.

Artificial Intelligence.........'the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines'

It's everywhere isn't it, particularly in the creative field. And that's the problem. Because it is so widespread even genuine art is being questioned.

That's what happened to me recently, I got publicly accused not once but twice of using AI to design my cross stitch for me.

Now my crochet is being targeted.

AI generated ‘crochet’ is a huge problem. It doesn’t even look like crochet but AI crochet social media posts are flying especially on Facebook (people seem to be more easily duped on FB in particular for some reason…demographic?) literally hundreds of people swooning over an AI generated ‘crochet’ plushie desperate for the non existent pattern. Worrying times.

What’s also worrying is that when I posted my anger at being accused of my crochet being AI generated many people told me it’s because my crochet looks as good as AI and I should take it as a compliment!

Have you seen AI generated crochet!!?!?

I know the intention was kindness but since when was AI the benchmark for workmanship? As a handcrafter I definitely do not aspire to be ‘as good as AI’

Telling a creative that their work looks ‘as good as AI’ as if it’s complimentary is possibly one of the most insulting things you could say and shows poor understanding of the damage AI is doing to the creative industry. The use of AI presents a significant environmental impact too which you may like to research further yourself.

It's also incredibly insulting to have someone question my art without fact checking first. If these people had spent just five minutes of their time researching me and my work first before accusing me they would see straight away that I do not use AI.

I don't need to use AI, I'm very confident in my own ability and experienced in my craft to not need to resort to using a machine to simulate my intelligence.

I'm sure there is a place for AI in certain fields/industries however I'd like to make it absolutely clear that I am NOT an advocate of the use of it in art.

So please......the onus is on you........before you accuse do your research so you can avoid causing a genuine artist unnecessary hurt.

If you are struggling to tell the difference between AI and reality perhaps take some time to educate yourself, there are many resources out there that you can use to help you……You Tube videos for example.

AI is here to stay and I’ve no doubt these kind of accusations will become something I have to deal with more and more. If you are a creative and you are participating in ‘jumping on the trend’ of for example using Chatgpt to create caricatures of yourself in trending settings then you are part of the problem. The number of creative businesses that I’ve seen recently doing this is concerning.

Thank you very much to everyone who recently commented and expressed kind words of support regarding this. It’s good to know you have my back!
