Sometimes when I look around at all the craft projects I have started and supplies I have 'collected' over the years I feel overwhelmed!
The trouble is I want to make ALL the things but I just have the one lifetime (not the 5 that I actually need!) so this year I have challenged myself to try and use up some supplies and finish some long standing WIPs
Cue my bag of Scheepjes Stonewashed yarn, some of which are full balls I've had stashed for years and some of which has been leftover from other projects like the Nature's Walk blanket I finished last year (only took me 5 years to make that one!)
I love this yarn, it is lovely to crochet (and knit) with and I love the mottled colours. Simple granny squares joined as I made them seemed like a good plan. Easy on the brain, easy to pick up and put down and this project has been coming along with me to Craft and Chat evenings the last few months.
If you'd like to know how I make and join my patchwork grannies you can watch my video here....
How I make and join my patchwork grannies
These are the colours I'm using
- Lepidolite
- Yellow Jasper
- Canada Jade
- New Jade
- Axinite
- Smokey quartz
- Lilac Quartz
- Crystal Quartz
- Garnet
- Amazonite
- Brown Agate
- Tourmaline
- Rose Quartz
My colour placement is random which is easier the more colours you have, just avoid putting same colours next to each other or for example don't put the very dark shades together......you'll notice that I haven't put Brown Agate, Garnet and Lepidolite next to each other and that is intentional.
I made 195 squares in total
I honestly could have just kept making and making these squares, I've enjoyed it so much, but I was starting to get low on some of the colours and as this was a stashbuster I didn't want to buy more yarn as that would defeat the object!
My border has also been dictated by what yarn I had left. I'd got just under a ball of Moonstone left over from my Scheepjes colour pack blanket so I used the rest of this and a little Axinite for one of the rounds. I just did 5 rounds in total....
- Foundation round in Moonstone of dcs with htr decreases over the joins
- Htr round in Moonstone
- Camel stitch htr round in Axinite
- Camel stitch dc round in Moonstone
- slip stitch round in Moonstone
(Please note I use UK terms)
You can find a video showing you how to do a camel stitch border here.....
Just enough to frame all the squares nicely :)
Patchwork grannies are the perfect stashbuster so if like me you're feeling a little overwhelmed by your WIPs and supplies set yourself a challenge this year to get some things finished or to use up some yarn you already have! It's very satisfying!
