Rhoda

Priscilla Hewitt was a designer I came across quite early in my crochet journey. She designed and shared freely many classic patterns such as the Sunburst, Fisherman's Ring, Carousel and the Circle of Friends squares.

Priscilla sadly passed away in 2021 but her crochet will live on in my work and in many others for years to come.

I first crocheted her Circle of Friends square back in 2014, you can read about it here...

Circle of Friends 2015 blog post

and I've made blankets with this square several times since, below is a couple of them.....

I've had this colour combo waiting in the wings for a while and with 7 colours it is perfect for Circle of Friends.

These are the colours I've used. Wild Orchid will be my joining colour. I've called this combo Rhoda which is an ancient Greek name and means Rose. The name has a big association and history with the Greek Island of Rhodos (Rhodes). The pinks used in this combo made me think of beautiful pink roses and Rhoda seemed to fit the bill perfectly!

I'm planning to make 42 squares and I’m using my easy colour placement method for this one. You can find my easy colour placement method for squares here.....

Colour Placement Method - Granny Square Edition

You can find a video for how I make the Circle of Friends square here. It's mostly the same as the original, I've made just a couple of very slight changes.

How I make a Circle of Friends square

I get asked a lot how I deal with ends and towards the end of the video I show you my method.

I’m joining my squares with this continuous method….

Continuous join as you go

Note that the joining points will differ from those in the video as the number of stitches along the side of the squares in the video is different to the circle of friends squares. I’m joining at five stitch intervals.

This is still very much a work in progress at the moment so come and follow me on socials to see my updates!
